Ensuring Reliable Performance with Plate Heat Exchanger Certification

AHRI Certification

The Key to Guaranteed Performance: AHRI Certification

Achieving consistent and reliable performance in plate heat exchangers starts with AHRI certification. The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) stands as the sole independent third-party organization globally that certifies the performance of these critical components. As a non-profit entity, AHRI provides an unbiased evaluation, ensuring the equipment lives up to its claims.

The AHRI Liquid to Liquid Heat Exchangers (LLHE) Certification Program

The AHRI LLHE Certification Program offers third-party validation of thermal performance, ensuring that a plate heat exchanger will function according to the manufacturer’s specifications. This certification confirms that the equipment is designed with appropriate sizing tolerances, offering peace of mind regarding its performance.

AHRI’s credibility is backed by over 300 member companies, which manufacture more than 90% of residential and commercial air conditioning, heating, water heating, and commercial refrigeration equipment in North America. The initiative to create a uniform certification standard for plate heat exchangers began in the late 1990s, spearheaded by the US subsidiary of Alfa Laval. By 2001, the LLHE Certification Program was launched in North America and expanded to a global standard in 2012.

Addressing Industry Challenges

One of the biggest issues in the plate heat exchanger industry is the manipulation of heat duty calculations to reduce costs. This practice, where manufacturers adjust calculations to offer smaller, cheaper units, leads to underperforming systems. The consequence is higher energy consumption and operating costs for the end users, which also negatively impacts environmental performance.

Accurate heat duty calculations are essential for specifying the right heat exchanger for a system. When these calculations are altered, it undermines the reliability of the equipment, making it difficult for consultants, specifiers, and end customers to trust in the performance of their heat exchangers. This widespread issue results in significant financial and operational repercussions once the underperformance is discovered.

The Importance of AHRI Certification

AHRI certification ensures that the thermal performance of plate heat exchangers is not compromised by deceptive practices. By providing independent verification, AHRI certification boosts confidence in the industry and ensures that all stakeholders—from suppliers to end users—can trust in the performance of their systems.

Long-term benefits of include fostering a focus on energy efficiency and innovation within the industry, encouraging manufacturers to develop more efficient products.

Alfa Laval's Commitment to AHRI Certification
